There is something about getting away for a few nights which is so refreshing. The Mornington Peninsula, just a short drive from Melbourne, is the ideal getaway spot for families.
It might be because I grew up on the coast, but I love being around the beach to re-charge, come summer or winter. The Frenchies try and make our way to the peninsula whenever we can for a quick break, but it can get rather expensive so am sharing details of a little gem*. Next time you are heading down to the peninsula why don't you stay at the Retro Beach Shack- AirBnb in Rye.
The seaside town of Rye is less than a 100km from Melbourne and is easily accessible via the freeway or the longer coastal drive. The seaside town has all the essentials for a weekend away and does not carry the price tag of Portsea and Sorrento.
The Retro Beach Shack, a 70's holiday house, is located in a quiet section of Rye, with easy access to the bayside beach, supermarket, bakery and shops.
There is the option to walk to the bayside beaches (about 20min) or drive and park along the various parking spots along the bayside coast. Alternatively drive to the surf beaches such as the Rye back beach and Portsea Surf Beach - more details here.
The advantage of visiting the Peninsula, is that if you are travelling with kids you can either access the calm bayside beach (ideal for toddlers and the young ones) or for the more experienced beach goers there is the busier surf beaches which dot the coast.
The Retro Beach Shack:
The holiday house is spotless and cosy - built onto a large block, the elevated house has 2 bedrooms with double beds, a third open plan room has two single beds. The house can accommodate six people comfortably with all mod-cons including a coffee machine - see link for all details.
There is plenty to explore in the area if you don't want to spend the entire time on the beach (note you will need a car though)!
Here are some suggestions:
